CHAPTER 21

The two days following the meeting of the nine domains passed with the speed of a falling star. It was early evening on the day after the agreement was signed, when the royal party from Kashold arrived. They were greeted by Nosaj and Inaria, who escorted them to their chambers.

Every chamber of the keep was occupied, except for a single suite of three rooms, which Ecila had ordered held for Fainhall’s royal couple and their servants. The chambers were the furthest away and faced the rear garden.

The next day the keep was overrun with activity as the last of the preparations in the great hall were being finished for the coronation. The great hall was the largest room of the keep, and its six double doors opened to the main gardens. A platform rising six feet above the floor was set, and on it rested the royal throne of Freemorn. At the same time, the main gardens were prepared for the crowds of Freemorn’s citizens who would be watching the coronation through the open doors.

While the workmen put the finishing touches on what they’d begun several days before, Enaid, Inaria, and Enna went into the rear garden and sat on a stone bench. They had gone to see Etak earlier, to discuss their plan, but found her sick.

When her handmaid told them she was ill, Enna refused to be sent away and went into the chambers only to find Etak bent over a bowl. The instant she saw her, she sensed what was wrong.

“A hard pregnancy?” she’d asked, kneeling next to the queen, rubbing her back.

“Terrible,” Etak had whispered, her voice raspy. “Nevets was not like this. I know not how I survived the council meetings.”

Enna had continued to rub her back. “I came to ask a favor but will not do so now. Speak not to Kali of anything. We go to plant false information and use your name to do so to protect Fainhall from Hakebar.”

Etak had nodded, and then spun back to the bowl.

Enna shook away the morning’s memory to glance around. The garden appeared to be the only place in the keep where the activity was at a minimum, which was why so many of the royals were there.

And their timing was perfect, for seated not ten feet away were Queen Kali and her handmaids basking in the warmth of the sun.

When they sat on the bench, Enaid created a block around them, before silently pushing her thoughts to Inaria and Enna. Feel the darkness, do you? One of her maids is of the darkness too.

Rather than reply, they both nodded.

Then we begin. She released the block, while maintaining another over her mind. No one, not the two near her, nor others in the garden, would be able to sense anything. Having the block in place when surrounded by other Women of Power was not something to arouse suspicion in this sort of a gathering; it meant only that the women wanted privacy.

They spoke softly, almost conspiratorially, but it was just loud enough for someone to hear, if they concentrated.
